It's remarkable how little new we have learned about the Bush Administration's pre-Sept. 11 neglect of the terrorist threat. I've just reread the chapter "Operation Ignore" in Al Franken's wonderful book _Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right", which was published last September. Richard Clarke is prominently mentioned, as is the Aug. 6 memo that Bush ignored while on vacation, the Cheney task force on terrorism that never met, and the meeting Rice had with Sandy Berger in December 2000 and later lied about by telling Time magazine she couldn't remember meeting him or talking about terrorism with him.

Why can't the Bush Administration simply admit that they never took terrorism seriously enough until it bit us all on the ass on September 11? (I know why they can't: then they'd have to face up to the fact that they haven't done enough about it _since_ Sept. 11 either.)
