Squirtgun is much more immediate, and it's easier for the cat to
associate the squirtgun with the behavior you're trying to stop.
I was babysitting for someone who also had recently gotten a kitten, and
was instructed to squirt the kitten with a spray bottle if he did
anything he shouldn't. (They gave a list of behaviors they were trying
to break him of, plus there's the little thing of my not tolerating a
cat in my lap, due to allergies. The spray bottle was a lot more
effective on that cat than throwing another cat of similar age about
10'. Or maybe the cat being trained with the spray bottle was smarter
to begin with. The thrown cat was named Tequila....)
