I think this may be one of those cases where if you aren't in the situtation, you can't judge how you'd react. A few years before I had children, I was having a discussion with 4 of my brothers and the subject came up. My brothers, who all had kids, unanimously and without hesitation said they would die for their children. At the time, I thought they were all nuts.
