I don't think it was the Chinese population. I think it was central Asia. The articles also cite 16 million carrying his Y which would imply a population of 200 million. Chinese is 5 times that large.
Sorry, I missed a factor of two since Ys are only half the population. 400 million, but that's still smaller than China.
