I'm a PC gamer and don't have either, but have thought about it some.
I'm biding my time until my kids are old enough to demand one.

I've gotten the impression that the hardcore console gamers just get
both systems rather than swear by just one or the other. Basically,
the games you want to play is the prime determinant of which system
you should get. If your kids games are available for both systems,
you need some alternate criteria. Will you (or other adults) play any
games on the console? Are more of those types of game more common on
XBox or PS2? If you don't care about games yourself, maybe just buy
the cheapest one?

Other considerations: the XBox is basically a PC, some people have
hacked theirs to run linux. It comes with a hard disk, while the PS2
doesn't - some types of games aren't very conducive to not having a
hard disk. On the other hand, it seems more xbox games get ported to
the PC (since they are so similar), so you'd get better coverage with
a PC and PS2 rather than PC and XBox.

Another consideration is that the PS2 plays old Playstation games, and
very likely, the PS3 (probably due xmas 2005 or so) will play PS2
games. The Xbox2 will be much less likely to support old xbox games
since indications are they are going to a whole new processor
platform.
