I didn't see that quote..but I have to admit that I had trouble even
getting to the Rolling Stone site.

If the quote you are thinking of
 "evil one is among us".

then

The "Evil One" usually refers to Satan. Evangelicals often picture Satan
as active in the world, prompting people to do evil. The anti-Christ is
usually referred to as the anti-Christ. The logical choice for Bush's
reference is Satan. It fits his other statements fairly well. It would be
hard to picture many of his other statements with a radical millenialist
worldview. For example, the spreading of democracy; the looking towards
the long term for the world, the respect he has shown for Islam are very
inconsistant with such a worldview. They are not inconsistant with the
view of an active Satan. So, given this great candidate for the reference
to "the evil one", why pick a dobtful one?

Now, all of this is predicated on me not just missing an accurate Bush
quote that states something like

"I expect my children to be alive when the Rapture comes"

or

"the anti-Christ is among us; time grows very short"

I could give others....I have heard these arguements a few times.

Finally, many Evangelicals think end time may be soon, but they agree that
"it is not their's to know the hour." Only a small fraction of those who
avidly read the "Left Behind" series think that they _know_ the end is
near. I know these folks, I live in an area where even Methodists are
Baptists. With all due respect, I don't think the authors of the first two
articles have any feel for Evangelicals.
