The Age of an Engine

There are many ways to look at each period or time. One picks the lens to
view the world that makes what you are looking at snap into focus. Viewed
from the lens of energy, there have been three waves of industrialization
and capitalization in the modern period, each can be defined by the
dominant source of energy, and, as importantly, the engines which were
used to harness that energy. Wealth is, effectively, the condensation of
work relative to the workings of engines. 

The triangle of an engine age is marrying power source, to power plant,
to means of application of the result.
