The Beeb suggests tin oxide was used because lead (presumably Lead Oxide) was in short supply in Britain, but tin wasn't (remember that various groups, such as the Phoenicans and their off-shoots traded or mined tin in Britain, an important resorce in bronze production). Too bad they didn't have titanium oxides, so the make-up won't yellow over time...
