That isn't a strong correlation, but it is the only one posted so far that has an unambiguous trend. I calculated a linear coefficient of correlation of r=+0.25 for the 2004 Bush margin of victory over Kerry vs. Federal expenditures per dollar of taxes, and r=+0.26 in 2000 Bush/Gore.
