According to a written explanation from CBS, the United Church of Christ

They're just a business doing what businesses do, which is to protect their business interests. I think they're scared shitless that the "moral values voters" crap they feed us has sunk in, and will be turned against them if they air this really quite reasonable ad.

"Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and
other minority groups by other individuals and organizations," reads an
explanation from CBS, "and the fact the Executive Branch has recently
proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union
between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on
the [CBS and UPN] networks."

It's hard to see what they're afraid of here -- is it the exec branch itself, or the 51% (of voters) who put the exec branch back in office?

Ultimately, they're afraid of their shadows -- the dark climate of fear
that they helped to create.
