The only evidence we have for this is Saddam's own claim. April Glaspie (the US Ambassador who supposedly gave Saddam the okay to invade) has stated 9(IIRC) that the transcripts of her meeting with Saddam were doctored by the Iraqi government. Saddam is not exactly a reliable source.


But if Saddam were trying to find out what the US would do what would be the point of doctoring transcripts? And if he wasn't, why have a meeting at all and reveal his plans?


Not that I expect his actions to make a lot of sense of course...
