What's the worst thing about it? What OSs does it work under? Is it more
mouse-dependent or can it be mostly or fully driven from the keyboard?
How much would it cost for me to get a properly licensed copy?

Mail.app, the freebie that comes with OSX, is pretty good.

That's the one I use now.

Eudora's a pretty good one too. (Payware.)

And I used to use that one.

Netscape Communicator has a very nice thread manager for discussion groups (!) and integrates more or less seamlessly with Navigator. (Freeware.)

And I used to use that one!

And before Mail I used Microsoft Entourage for a while. It was quite nice when it worked properly, but it regularly corrupted the database it stored the mail in, losing mail and so on. So that wasn't any use.

Mail, Eudora, Pine and (I think) Communicator all use Unix mbox format files to store the mail.
