That was my recollection of Clarke's explanation of the event from 2010 the book -- that the monoliths were actually affecting the Jovian mass itself, compressing the planet but also bringing in enough hydrogen to get it past the minimum point for fusion.
The movie, of course, couldn't go into that detail. Exposition doesn't play well onscreen. Miron, you might want to look into the book if you've not done so; one of the things touched on in that novel, which I hijacked myself in one of my own books, was that Jupiter's core is a diamond the size of Earth.
