The Soviet Union was a country in which the state religion was
Marxism.

Marxism was not a very good religion and eventually it failed. It did
not last as long as Bahai, another recent religion which is still
going strong.

Marxism provided entities to emulate, such as a mythological Engels, a
`virtuous way of life' such as working oneself to death for the sake
of the Party, a promise of the future, a communist world in which
people enjoyed themselves -- a heaven on earth, and enemies.

The Soviet Union never tried to stamp out its own religion. The
government attacked other religions as vigorously as it could.

As for why I think this is so: I visited the then Soviet Union and I
listened to people from it and from east European countries under its
domination.
