Why is his career toast? Maybe I don't understand what an uncharted sea mount is. Could he have discerned it even though it was uncharted? Sonar?
The Navy has a tradition or policy that whenever a ship runs aground, the captain is ultimately responsible for whatever is going on in his ship and will loose his command. Normally, this is a career killer by itself (commands are fiercely competitive), and if it was an error of judgement...
We'll probably have to wait and see what the investigation says though, but some of the preliminary information I read is that the sub was running at high speed (30+kts) and at that speed the sea mound would be invisible. Plus the sub was operating in sea lanes that were not fully charted.
If you want to talk about military equipment absorbing damage and still operating, check out this article: http://tailslide.firelight.dynip.com/f15wing.asp
I can't find the link anymore, but there were some VERY interesting AARs about M1s absorbing punishment in Iraq.
