As something of a counter-point to that, in the famous Battle of New Orleans, the British invasion fleet was, I believe, accompanied by at least two fully-stocked colony ships. Thus, while the British did have some distractions in Europe, they also did attack the United States with what they thought was sufficient force to win.
The only winner in the War of 1812 was Tchaikovsky.
