Just a quick pair of comments here. Bush's popular vote was 51%. That is not, by any definition of the word, overwhelming, especially considering that Kerry's popular vote was 48%. The difference was just over 3 million votes cast, which is the population of many large US cities.

[I'll leave aside the regular addendum many seem to add: "The majority of those that bothered to vote", as though that means anything about the actual results, because of course it doesn't.]

Additionally Doug's comment was that "more and more people are beginning to understand that this administration has been leading us in the wrong direction", which suggests to me that he meant "In the last year or so, more and more...", or after the '04 election. There's some opinion poll evidence to support his claim.
