I'm not much of a bird watcher, but I enjoy reading articles about animals
thought to be extinct that are rediscovered. Other than this one, the
Coelacanth and the Almiqui (if you are not familiar with this animal, look
it up on Google - very unique) were rediscovered when they were thought to
be extinct. I have also been following the efforts to attempt to clone the
extinct Thylacinidae (Tasmanian Tiger) from the century old baby specimens
found in a museum preserved in alcohol instead of formaldehyde.

Cornell Researcher Says

WASHINGTON Apr 28, 2005 - The ivory-billed woodpecker, a striking bird that
once flourished in the forests of the Southeast but was thought to have
become extinct, has reportedly been sighted in eastern Arkansas, a Cornell
University researcher says in a paper released Thursday.

John W. Fitzpatrick said there have been several independent sightings of a
bird that appears to be an ivory-billed woodpecker.
