That doesn't necessarily follow. Religion might be a bit like a courtship dance -- or maybe like a funeral ceremony -- something ritualized to allow one to get a handle on something that seems ungraspable, unknowable, or at the very least baffling. As such separating religion from the concept of deity doesn't necessarily kill the god.
