Discovery Channel is taking votes to determine who is the "Greatest
American". The entries I have problems with, are George Bush, Bill Clinton
and Bill Gates.

(Snip)

Bill Gates because his accomplishments have nothing to do with being
American, but more to do with wealth and capitalism.

And your problem is? His story is very American. He (1) earned his money (2) by creating (or at least finding & marketing) a product never seen before, which (3) helped revolutionize the way we do things.

It's as American as Henry Ford, and one reason America has been at the forefront of innovation and human well-bring. So Microsoft has its faults (as did Fords.) It has competitors.

However, according to
his biography, on the links below, he is quite a philanthropist,
contributing over $27 billion (yes, it says billion!) to different
humanitarian causes. Maybe he just doesn't get enough good press.

Right. So in him the right hand has worked very, very well and now, in true Gilded Age tradition, he's turned to the left hand side of things. (Though I'm sure it was Melinda's doing. However, once she gave him the idea, he took it up like a shiny new toy.)

I'd keep Gates on the list; his story is extremely American.

But I'm thinking. I'll be safe and vote Walt Disney. :-)

And he differs from Gates how? Besides being in a different field of endeavour?

Pat
