Not too many people are aware of the natural connection between Silicon
Valley and mercury. One of the area's natural attractions is the Almaden
Quicksilver County Park, whose name is not just a pretty word attached to
a pretty place: quicksilver is what was mined there. Or, more accurately,
Cinnabar ore was mined there, from which quicksilver was extracted. I
have always suspected (with virtually no scientific evidence to back up
my suspicions) that the high level of mercury in fish caught in SF Bay
is related to the valley's natural mercury.

I'm from San Francisco and I didn't know that. Thanks.

As for "breeding geeks," I suspect that the mercury has very little to
do with it. I just thought I'd show off my limited knowledge of the
history of my adopted home.
