Because... I believe it is in the book. Its been awhile since I've read it, but I think the same concerns existed about the book.

It's been a while since I read it too (although more recently than its 1898 publication!) and as I recall the Martians arrive for the first time, all at once, in huge artillery shell type things and proceed to invade straight away.

And then all die from catching a sniffle.
