Last weekend, I had dinner with and was at a couple of speaking engagements with Harvey Tharp, an Iraq veteran and Navy JAG who resigned his commission, not over torture, but because he would not switch into a targeting job. He was Air Force, got his law degree, then entered the Navy. He was the liason in Kirkuk for many months, working closely with Iraqi people he described as wonderful. Then came his orders to transfer into the NSA and do targeting. He says that there was just no way that after working for so long to "humanize" the Iraqi people, he was unwilling to "dehumanize" them by collaborating on the country's destruction. So he wrote a letter to his CO, saying that he believed that if he took the new assignment, he would be guilty of war crimes. Now he's an active member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.
