Is there internet page that helps you find a molecule, based on the
structural formula?
For example, I would like to enter something like "a benzene ring with two
metils attached to it" and get "xylene" in return.
Are you familiar with the IUPAC naming conventions, which are designed to
give every organic compound a unique name which describes its structure? I
know that there are web pages which describe the method for arriving at the
name from the structure, as well as a several-page entry in the CRC
Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Of course, many compounds have "common"
names which are different from (and usually shorter than) the IUPAC name,
and while in many cases you will find that looking up the IUPAC name in the
CRC Handbook will give you the synonym(s) (and usually the other way
around), that may or may not be the case for all compounds.
