I'm amazed at how effectively this debate has
been transformed from a discusson on just how
accountable the Prez should be to his citizens
into an almost flame war about anti-semitism.

What will it take for trasnparency and
accountability? Someone dousing himself
with gasoline and burning himself outside
Rumsfeld's office?

Well, since you all don't want to talk about how
Mr. Bush seems to want to avoid getting an
earfull from someone directly harmed by his
"tough decisions", I'll add some kindling to
fire on that other debate...

One could argue that given:
  1. The U.S. has strong political ties to
and an obvious national interest in
the security of the Nation of Israel
  2. The U.S. also has a strong interest in
     not having a Mid-East free-for-all with
Israel on one side and most of the Arab
     world on the other
  3. The situation is such that if the Israelis
were to do any military raids, etc. in
one of their neighboring states, it could
likely set off the scenario described in (2.)
If we assume that the Israeli diplomatic corps
made clear that they saw an Iraqi WMD program
and that if nobody else did anything about it,
then they would, we can see some pressure on
Bush to "do something."

I would need to do research to cite that the
Israelis were actually saying such, and can
see ways to challenge assumptions 2 and 3,
and (most of all) disagree with he path that
Bush has chosen even assuming he had valid
goals. But this reason strikes me as a better
than some of the ones put forth and defended
by the Administration.
