I don't think that's the point he's trying to make; what Ronn! is
suggesting is that it really doesn't matter what decision might have
been made. Even if there'd been a larger scale evacuation and K had
*still* slammed NO as it did, there would have been some people left
behind and there would have been bitter complaining about that, just as
much as if there had been no attempt whatsoever made to get anyone
clear in time.
Even if the response on the Federal level had been quicker, surely some
would have still found reason to complain.
It's not possible to be a public figure *and* clear of criticism. The
trouble, as I see it, is when a public figure is more afraid of
criticism than he is of being very, very careful about risking lives.
But in order to be careful about risking lives, you have to give a damn
about them, and while I'm sure Duh-bya *does* care to *some* extent, I
am not convinced he cares anywhere near as much as he should.
