On 2005 December 6, David Brin apologized for taking sides in the
current US political conflict, "... talking about what the Democratic
Party must do ..." I do not blame him.
But the Republicans might repudiate President Bush and his
administration, if only for being incompetent. (The opposition party
has talked about the immoral and illegal.)
Republicans favor three themes: being steadfast, being disciplined,
and standing tall:
* be steadfast in defending and upholding the Constitution of the
United States, such as Amendment IV, which talks of "The right of
the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and
effects ..." Republicans suffer when they attack liberty.
* be disciplined in ensuring that in the US government, revenues
equal expenditures. After all as George Washington said in his
Farewell Address as the first United States president,
... towards the payment of debts there must be revenue; that to
have revenue there must be taxes ...

Republicans suffer when they disown George Washington.
* stand tall in ensuring a sensible education, not a misleading
education. Republicans suffer when they discourage search. Only
cowards cringe from discovering the truth.
Rather than the metaphors of health and the patriarchal family
embedded in the previous notions, I prefer a biological metaphor.
Imagine an elephant:
* Elephants maintain their weight. To get rid of flab is good; but
to starve oneself? That is to be anorexic and girlie.
* Elephants study their environment. They have at least one sense
that humans lack, the ability to hear infra-sound. Science
provides humans with new senses. Politically, a wise government
favors science and all that goes with it. Only the puddle-headed
swim always in fantasy.
* Elephants make decisions for their distant future as well as for
the present. A wise government considers their and our children,
such as debt to be imposed on them, where to locate a rebuilt New
Orleans, and whether to end the current doubts held by businessmen
and home owners whether to invest privately in rebuilding New
Orleans. Only the most poorly brought up children fail to think
beyond the current minute.
