Maybe they just admitted that they got beat by Burt Rutan. SpaceShipOne and its White Knight launch platform probably cost less to develop and fly than the fuel for one flight of the XB-70-based system. Then again, Rutan's design doesn't go Mach 3.3 and probably can't launch "rods of god".
