Good read, Julia -- really interesting and pertinent. A personal anecdote: while the vast majority of patients with depression do require days -> weeks to respond to medication, at least one patient told me she felt better after one day on Prozac [re: seretonin effect -- of course, a couple of dark chocolates *do* reduce my stress level within 20 minutes!]. OTOH, I didn't find any drug I tried acceptable b/c of untenable side effects (continuous headache, 'zombification,' gut problems) or no effect. But working with horses (?enriching my environment) and changing career focus (stress reduction) has kept things under acceptable control [?neurogenesis effect].
