We're not.  We are good and bad, like everybody else.

We do good things and we do bad things.

And even when we do good things, it can be very, very shitty...  I say this
having just done part of a debriefing on a lousy, stinking, rotten car crash
from 25 years ago, where I, theoretically, was one of the good guys.

That New Yorker article talks about troops in Iraq ordered to stop their
vehicles for nothing and Iraqis sending children out in front of the
convoys.  It's clear that the people who send the children out are doing a
bad thing.  But it's just as clear to me that the troops who receive those
orders, especially if they have to follow them in that situation, have a
very hard time thinking they're headed anywhere but Hell, having already
visited it.
