You can be denied a security clearence for lesser things than that. Like oh, wait, can't talk about that incident for another 3 years. Anyway... But basically membership of an organisation which has the potential to be infilitrated by people hostile to the US government, who if professionals could play off a persons loyalties between said government and their lost relative to extract information... yes, I can understand perfectly well how the sort of professional paranoids you need in a security organisation would have an issue with it.
