As most of you know, my niece's husband was killed in action in Fallujah 11/10/04. Since then, I have become friends with quite a few other families who lost a loved one in this war. Among them is Mary Tillman, who lives near us. She's the mother of Pat Tillman, the NFL player who enlisted and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. As you may have seen in the news this week, Mary is very unhappy with the results of the "final" DoD investigation into Pat's deat. Our Congressman, Mike Honda, has asked Congress to investigate Pat's death. If you're in the U.S. and so inclined, I'd appreciate if you would support this by asking your representative to support Mike's call to investigate.
Not everything about Pat's death is public -- I know a bit more than has been published and what I know is disturbing. I can tell you from my own experience that losing someone in combat, so far from home, so far from ordinary life, is especially difficult because it feels so distant. I wanted to learn all I could about how Wes died -- as I think I wrote here, I visited his crew chief in North Carolina, which helped me quite a bit by closing the gap a bit, as it were. I understand and empathize deeply with Mary's desire for the truth. All we have are memories and stories and we want them to be as complete and accurate as possible. Thanks for any support you folks might give.
