So far as I can tell, Dawkins is talking about his friends at universities in the UK and US, his point being that there are at least some people for whom religion doesn't seem to be an innate part of existence. I'd imagine that his friends tend to be more atheistic than the rest of the population. I'd also imagine that nobody has performed rigorous research on Dawkins' friends as a population.
