Back burning is what it's called. Probably wouldn't be able to help  
in the current fires - back burning works best in the early fire  
season to reduce fuel load in various strategic areas. Once it's too  
late in the season, back burning has a high risk of simply starting a  
new fire. Back burns getting out of control aren't uncommon.

Oz tv right now is saying that there are 18 fires concurrent in  
California. It's just like last summer in Oz, with way more people to  
move and far too many homes to protect.
