i dunno, rob, you could be right.  maybe there is a reason why the plot
is describing what goes on in schools, nowadays...  it just seemed to
me that the writers were leaving the answer to why she jumped, hanging,
to be resolved in a later episode.  they left some clues to keep us
guessing.  when she appeared at the beginning of the episode, she
appeared distraught at the mural, or graffiti.  evidently she was being
harassed and was afraid of what her parents would do.

What makes you think the jumper is part of the ongoing storyline?
It just impressed me as a momentary event that illustrated how screwed 
up the school John is going to is. Like the metal detectors at the 
doors.
