It is a surprising academic salary.  Part of the solution
may be that many low-paying schools don't have astronomy
programs.

The "only 1,700 astronomers" part is of course bogus.
Maybe "only 1700 professional research astronomers" would
be true.  This would for instance leave out the guy with
an MS who was doing basic astronomy courses at my school.
I'm sure he would have brought down the average salary
some.  : )
