there are a lot of reasons for climate change, wayne. the human causes
are directly related to overpopulation, materialism, waste, pollution,
war, non renewable energy and other factors that increase carbon
emissions and cause global warming to accelerate. it will only get
worse.
it may trigger glaciation, but no where near as fast as portrayed in
the movie, "the day after tomorrow".
like charlie says... "We need to know what the effects are so we know
which of those effects will become problems, 'cause we need to prepare
for those".
because human populations are concentrated near water those will be
most severely inundated. one way to solve the problem is a huge die
off... "think of it as evolution in action"... i expect there will
be a culling among the poor and powerless, and the wealthy elite will
survive to "inherit the earth". what we see happening now in the
global economy is just the beginning...

...warming is historically followed by increased glaciation. Sea
levels may end up dropping...
...sustainable development is a good thing, but I don't think that
global warming is the main reason it should be pursued.
Starvation (drought, a colder Europe if the Atlantic Conveyor fails,
reduced farmland) and disease...
...warming is likely to lead to the first, and exacerbate the second
(for a while - then it'll ameliorate the second in the worst way
possible).
... Global Warming could cause a war. The Greens vs the Industrial
Nations or...
I can't see how it can exacerbate overpopulation, unless you think
people are more likely to have sex in warm weather.
How do you expect that Global Warming will eventually reduce
population? Tidal surges into low lying areas or via famine resulting
from a reduction in arable land?
Less space and less food means less people, eventually.
Or more likely the "have nots" who don't see any other way of improving
their lot attacking the "haves," or simply fighting each other over
scarce resources, as is common in "less-developed" nations and the
inner cities of "more-developed" ones.
Perhaps what he is suggesting is not so much that it would lead to
greater increases in total population but that it could lead to more
crowding if people are forced to leave areas where they and generations
of their ancestors have lived and move to areas where other people are
already living.
Or disease, or war have been suggested. (With the existence of
biological agents which can be cooked up at home, the two may not be
that different . . . )
I grew up in the UK and spent 8 years in Cyprus, so I'm as familiar
with Europe as I am with Oz (and I've without doubt seen more of
Australia than most natives), and seeing average temperatures in
Western Europe dropping by 5 - 10 degrees would be, without doubt, a
catastrophe. Britain and Ireland would suffer greatly. It's only a
matter of time before there's a huge flood in London.
... increasing glaciation in the northern land masses would take a long
time to suck up the water from the Greenland melt and the Antarctic ice
sheets. There'll be a lot of rise before there's a fall (and if we keep
forcing the climate, the reverse may not come for a
LOOOOOOONG time).
