I haven't read the posts so was wondering if they had an opinion on
how you would test whether someone could write code? I can see that's
kinda testable in an interview but doing it in a certifiable way seems
tough to me.

I got the impression working there the BBC is a big diverse
organisation so it's quite possible that that was just the group I
ended up working in. (Compared with say Google where the hiring &
interview process is controlled & coordinated across the whole
company).
