Hi Lyle,
dont know anything about this really, but have you looked at mongo db and couch 
db. from what i've heard the standard rdbms way of doing things does not work 
particularly well with high volumes of traffic to sites hosted on multiple 
servers.

also have you seen the stuff about how youtube is managed?
