Jon,
I don't fully understand your suggestion.
What issue or problem with the proposal does it resolve?
If you're suggesting that 30 or 60 is going to pay for all the perks
(newsletter, etc) of full membership for the whole team then I'm afraid its
a no-goer. Maybe in 5 years time when we have a big budget. What are these
figures based on and what did you intend them to pay for? I'm sure we can
stretch to posting a few copies of the newsletter to the teams where there
are no full members so its not as if you're going to be excluded from
everything.
If, as is proposed, students aren't required to have membership to play in
the student or fun events then why charge them anything? Perhaps you're
thinking ahead to a separate student organisation? Not a bad idea at all. In
essence that is exactly what the BUF has always been and this proposal is
partly an attempt to 'Open' (pun intended) it it up more to a wider
audience.
Right now student ultimate is brilliant - over 55 university teams and
growing, more and more well-organised student events and still the great
party atmosphere (so i'm led to believe.) This proposal really doesn't
represent a threat to any of this (do you guys have the time or the energy
to party at Tour events??? - maybe I'm getting old!)
If new student players don't want to pay the 18 fee then they are still
going to have access to 90% of the tournaments which might be relevent to
them. To those who do want the Tour, 18 is going to be a drop in the ocean.
Where's the problem? Who is going to suffer?
I had planned that only the more serious or experienced players would want
or expect to join the association so its not as if its some horrid tax
inflicted on freshers or something.
At the end of the day we have to take a certain amount of money from
everyone who plays 'seriously' - that includes some students albeit at a
discounted rate. In these early days we will rely on the 750 member
breakeven number otherwise the sums just don't add up.

Britdisc,
Would it not be possible for student teams to take membership as a group
in the same way that is proposed for youth teams? Perhaps a fee of 30
for the indoor season and 60 for the outdoor/Tour season (roughly
equivalent to 2 and 4 events worth of BUF tax) and perhaps a discounted
rate for both. That way student teams playing only student events would
no require membership. Student teams playing in "Open" BUA events would
require team membership. The membership would cover university members
playing for their university team. Any non-university members picking up
with the student team would have to be individual members of the BUA as
would student players who wish to play with a team other than their
university team. In that way student teams would still be encouraged to
play at open events and the cost would be no different from the cost
currently being paid through BUF tax.
Cheers

Just a query following the last point. I know that I could go away and
reread the proposal but -
I understood that the membership fee applied to only BUF organised
events
- ie the tour, nationals, coed nationals(?)
What I thought wasn't an issue was Student indoors and Student nationals
which would continue to be run as a student basis (hopefully encouraged
by
BUF or BUA or UKUA, but not sanctioned by BUF). The issue as I
understood
it was more whether student teams competing in offical UKUA events (such
as open regionals would be forced to pay the student membership fees
before they could enter). If this is the case then we have only to
worry
whether the jump from student only events to national events will
discourage too many or not - which is a good discusion. ... .. .
What I hope isn't an issue is requirment for wider student membership.
Could some one, better read than me, confirm that 'student' only events
+
beginner events will remain outside the requirment for BUA/UKUA
membership. I think that clarification would be useful.
cheers
