Dear all,

I understand from people I spoke to this weekend that I have received
quite a flaming on the Student email list last week, over the music at
Loughborough.

The criticism stemmed from a error made by a player who had not heard a
pick call because of the volume of the music, which was promptly turned
down.
I'd like to apologise to the player in question and to all other players
who felt their play was infringed by the music. I did not wish to be a
nuisance and the position of the speakers made it difficult to gauge the
volume on the pitch.

However, I'd also like to thank all the people who came up to me
afterwards to comment on the choice of tunes and how it set the tone for
a chilled out tournament. I was particularly pleased with the impact the
music had on the finals where it was only played between points. I felt
this added to the glory of scoring and heighten the tension as the game
dropped into silence as the pull went up. Again I'd like to thank
people, both players and in the audience, who praised the music.

I appreciate the need for a balance between creating an atmosphere and
interfering with play and I'm sorry that on this occasion the line was
crossed. I look forward to future tournaments where the music is very
much part of the set up, and strongly believe that the day music is not
allowed at tournaments would be a very sad one indeed.

All feed back is, of course, welcome and encouraged.
