As my contribution to the debate over competitiveness vs spirit, I'd like to
post some hard data from 1999 World Clubs in St Andrews (open division).

Average Spirit Score per team by region (bigger is better):

North America (8 teams) 95
Europe (23 teams) 93.15 (British Isles (7 teams) 95.5)
Rest of World (8 teams) 94.31

Since this is misleading as it doesn't account for competitiveness of
team/games played, here are the average sums of final placing and spirit
rank per team by region (smaller is better):

North America 29.88
Europe 42.57 (B.I. 45.72)
Rest of World 42.75

Perhaps subjective impressions of North American spiritlessness are
misleading?
