>why don't we have a play-off between the winners of
all the Winter Leagues, and then put the top one or two teams from that into the
Champions League each year?
Because it wouldn't be entirely fair that potential
second and third-placed teams in their leagues like Druids,
Sharks and Chevron should not have a chance at any of the
slots unlike the potential winners of the Midlands and Bristol Leagues
(Purple Haze, BAF or 90% Hopwood Park) - despite the glaring difference in what
those teams have to offer or learn at tournaments of this
level.
The
tournament has been set up like this because these are the teams that want to
play each other on a regular basis to try and kickstart European Ultimate to
make up some of the ground the US teams are creating between us and them. No
offence to Purple Haze, but if they were there instead of Chevron (if they are
still the northern powerhouse and not their Yorkshire cousins,
LeedsLeedsLeeds) I'm not so sure the likes of Skogsyddans or Liquidisc would be
too happy about the travelling time involved. If over time other teams regularly
surpass the 'member' teams then I'm sure they will be invited into the fold, but
the places are not currently 'up for grabs'.
Goodness knows how Al will distibute the 2 slots for
the Cambridge event...but as he has organised and is running the whole shebang I
guess it's up to him :-) I reckon the two highest non-Clapham or Chevvy teams at
Tour 1 2003 would be about the fairest way of deciding. Bring it on! Either that
or use Nationals results from 2002..but that would leave LeedsLeedsLeeds out in
the cold and now they've recruited they *may* be stronger than the
incumbents.
Well
done Carthorse, you deserve a medal for the things you've done recently in the
name of European and British Ultimate ;-)
For
the UK, why don't we have a play-off between the winners of all the Winter
Leagues, and then put the top one or two teams from that into the Champions
League each year? It would give 'all' teams something to aim for in the
Winter, as well as the Summer. It could also go someway to deciding which UK
teams could take the regional spots at the UK event.
Plus
we might be able to trick Sky or BBC into filming us by offering
them really cheap TV rights?
I am pleased to announce
a series of tournaments for 2003 that will get the cream of European
ultimate playing against eachother on a regular basis.
Following discussions
amongst the major European teams at WUCC2002 (Hawaii) we have come up with a
"European Champions League" format: a series of 8-team invitational club
tournaments. The format is designed to increase the level of
competition amongst the top European teams and provide a yearly focus for
club teams.
Champions League
1, Cambridge (UK), 3/4 May
2003
Champions League
2, Mainz (Germany), 14/15 June
2003
Champions League
3, Copenhagen (Denmark), 26/27 July
2003
This schedule is only
provisional at present. Each tournament will be attended by 6 member
teams, plus 2 regional teams. The member teams for 2003 are
Clapham Ultimate,
Chevron, Skogsyddans, Ragnarok, Feldrenner, Flying Angels, Red Lights,
Liquidisc and HUT. This was based on discussions amongst teams in
Hawaii.
Somebody will be
contacting teams that are interested in taking one of the regional spots for
each tournament.
Please contact me if you
wish to know any more.
