Wayne In response to your question regarding Liability if a member of public was injured during a practice/tournament, there are a few options regarding responsibility.
The solicitor involved would most likely attempt to make a recovery from the most profitable source. Depending where you are playing this may well be the owners of the fields, especially if they are a sports club who should have their own cover (check with the treasurer). However the persons organising the practice and the person actually causing the injury would also have a legal responsibility. For the individuals this would be picked up under their Personal Household insurance (if they have any) as this covers your Personal Liability. If you are organising a tournament - all those involved do have a legal responsibility for the safety of those taking part, and the general public - if you are on a committee, you still have a personal responsibility and a claimant could take individuals to court. I can't recommend strongly enough how important liability insurance is - worse case scenario could involve organisers losing their houses and any other assets they have if they don't have cover. Cost of cover is difficult to quantify, I will start talking to insurers in the New Year to get some quotes, but as you can imagine, in the present climate Public Liability Insurance is expensive, I think for a small tournament you would be looking at a minimum of 250. Also if the UKU would like me to have a look at their policy to ensure we have all the cover required I would be happy to do so. Question: Have any other Ultimate event organisers been required by the venue(s) to have Public Liability Insurance for their Ultimate events? What did you do? Where did you obtain your cover? What did it cost? Clarification: I'm particularly thinking of Club training sessions (e.g. Tooting Tigers' sessions) and lower key (i.e. NOT Tour/Nationals or Indoor Regionals/Nationals - as these are apparently covered by the UKU policy) events/leagues/tournaments (e.g. London Summer League, Crystal Palace Savage Sevens) that hire facilities but the public may still have access. Second question: Anyone KNOW (i.e. a professional in this field, I can do guesswork myself!) what the consequences of injuring members of the public at "unofficial" events (e.g. Clubs practising in the local park, and things like London Winter League, where we don't book or hire the facilities) would be if they decided to pursue it.
