The third Northern Winter League Event of the season took place on Sunday 18th January 2004. It was a fairly mild day for us northerners. It only took a few hours for the frozen pitches to soften up and the wind and light rain that came later helped us keep nice and warm as the day wore on. There was a different look to some of the teams competing this time with Chevron and Motion combining to form two new Manchester based teams and LeedsLeedsLeeds only having two teams that were different to those selected at the previous two events. The format was more open this time with all the teams having the chance to win the day's mini tournament. The early games saw LeedsLeedsLeeds' two teams win all of their respective pool games, including fairly comfortable wins over the two Manchester teams - Fog Lane Dynamos and South Manchester All Stars. Phat Eds pushed South Manchester pretty close before the Mancs edged out the Sheffield team 9-7. Durham had a strong showing against all teams and beat Lancaster in a close game, 7-6. The same couldn't be said for under-strength Trigger Happy of Bradford who didn't score a point in any of their three pool games. The afternoon included two Manchester v Leeds semi-finals. These saw much improved performances from the Lancastrians and both games ended up with sudden death wins for LeedsLeedsLeeds. In the bottom half, Durham continued with their good day by beating Trigger Happy (13-7) and then Phat 'Eds (11-8) to finish in a best ever fifth place. Lancaster completed Trigger's miserable day by beating them 13-4 to finish seventh. LeedsLeedsLeeds 1, looked like winning the final comfortably until a late rally by LeedsLeedsLeeds 2 took the game into sudden death. However, the comeback wasn't completed as LeedsLeedsLeeds 1 hung on for victory. Thanks to everyone for coming and the next (and final) Northern Winter League is pretty soon - Sunday 1st Feb.
