Day 4 Not really a very good day for the Brit boys and gals. British wins over the years against Japenese sides have been few and far between and the trend continued with both the open and mixed teams succumbing.
The form book had suggested that the open team should have won against the Japanese but the GB offence just couldn't handle the fast paced Jap D and succumbed 16-9, meaning GB Open face Canada in the second round. The mixed team had a much closer but controversial game with the Japanese winning in sudden death with a hotly contested line call. GB women lost to Canada 17-8 but the Cannucks were pushed all the way and showed their frustration with a couple of liberal interpretations of the pick rule. GB juniors had a poor day losing to the Germans (17-8) and the Canadians (17-4). They must now beat both the Finns and the Borg (Sweden) to qualify for the semis and realistically a chance for third (US and Canada really are in a league all of their own in the junior game). GB Masters won both games today (against Sweden 17-12, and Russia 17-8) and face the Americans in the morining in what is likely to be a rehearsal for the semi final whicn may prove to be the most realistic chance of preventing 6 USA-Canada finals. On more serious matters the tournament is in very serious danger of being discontinued. The lush perfectly prepared pitches of Turku have been ripped to shreds by 3 days of Ultimate and the city council has almost had enough....... Rumours that the TD have asked the GB squad to stop Alex"Carthorse"Bowers from using the fields for his morning gallops have so far gone unconfirmed. More tomorrow, if there is a tomorrow for WUGC 2004. AVBU p.s. guts started today...... funny old game that.
