Day 5 A GB win over USA???? Not quite yet, but we might not be too far away. The Silver Bear's (Roger Thompson) collection of old timers, museum pieces and antiques nearly pulled off a rousing comeback against the US masters team from Miami. Things didn't look good for the GB team first off when the O-team stalled badly to leave them 5-0 down but Once the D team got their feet on the pitch, things started to change and our elders made a strong comeback. But some things are just meant to be and despite having the disc twice at 11-10 down, they failed to convert, and it was not long before USA completed a 15-12 victory. Still, they have the knowledge that they have the workings to beat this team and will most probably have the chance to prove it in Fridays semi-final.
Elsewhere the open and mixed teams booked their quarter final spots with wins against the Czech and Swiss teams. The Open team look likely to face the Finns with the mixed facing the Kiwi team with many familiar faces. The Juniors had a great day, dispatching the hosts Finland in a tight game that went to sudden death, and then seeing off South Africa 14-10. GB Women faced the Irish women's team, gaining a 17-2 result which puts them in good stead to play the Japanese tomorrow. The Irish open team deserves a mention for their day's play, with convincing wins against China and Brazil. Another Open result of interest: United States 13 - Canada 17. GB have their shot at the Americans tomorrow. Todays baking heat and lack of rain has drawn the WUGC04 back from the brink of cancellation but the heat does have its drawbacks. The player centre, a building with glass walls, has turned into a giant conservatory. With this the venue for the Friday and Saturday night party (with entertainment from a German dance band) it may not just be Sammy Neilson's shocking outfits that will cause people to pass out.
