Charity Shield 2006 - the Season Starts Here The start of spring used to be associated in British frisbee with the migration from sports halls to muddy fields, as teams started to prepare for Tour and summer tournaments in the vain hope that the worst of our poor weather was over. Times have changed, thanks in part to the various Winter Leagues that have sprung up around the country over the past few years. March 11 saw the annual finals of these Leagues, with the Charity Shield on Wandsworth Common in London. Clapham gained revenge over Fire of London for taking 'their' Winter League title with a hard-fought win over their London rivals to secure the Charity Shield for the second year in a row. This year's Charity Shield raised over £500, which will be split between the GB Juniors and a local Clapham/Wandsworth Outreach programme. Fever provided the biggest shock of the day, defeating winners of the last LWL event EMO in the first round pool to earn a spot in the semi-finals. Brighton showed the benefit of blooding youngsters in the harsh environment of winter league, their sixth spot was their best result of the winter and bodes well for Tour later in the year. Boogie Knights, who had travelled down from Liverpool, took a couple of scalps, and Oxford's OW! continued to impress. Open Division Clapham Fire Ow!
