Tomorrow sees the final day of the European U17s championships taking place in Riga, Latvia. It's been a successful week for GB with us having 3 teams over here. GB Junior 2nd team came along to make up the numbers and they have had many close games, but only succeeded in beating the Estonian juniors. Too many of their matches took place on an astroturf pitch where layouts were too dangerous, and against junior teams more used to playing indoor ultimate, the surface seemed to favour them. GB Girls, having narrowly lost to Finland girls, then being bagelled by the Latvian junior women, won their first ever international game which was against the Swedish girls. They then went on to play much better against Latvia only losing 11-6 (when Latvia's previous 'worst' win was 17-3), and they followed that up with comprehensive wins against Finland and Sweden today. Tomorrow, they get one final chance to impress against Latvia who have looked extremely strong all week (and have been much admired by GB2, especially when they put their 'hot pants 7' on the pitch).
As for GB U17s, they have been competing against 4 other U17s teams and 3 junior open teams. Narrow losses to Lithuania and Lativa U20s didn't count, but in the important games, GB beat Estonia, Latvia and Finland 17-6 each time, then Sweden today in a tough match with numerous calls on both sides (well, it is GB vs Sweden) which we won 17-12. last game of the day was against GB2 where a number of key players were rested. GB2 seemed to be pulling away with it but after half time, captain Josh took his coat off and strolled onto the pitch which raised the team's game and they pulled it back and won 16-14. 9am semi final against Latvia should hopefully be a formality, then it's Sweden or Finland in the final (Finland beat Sweden 17-11 earlier in the week with a great hucking game that just didn't work against GB's zone).
