GB Juniors finally got it all together and pulled off a great win over Finland
in the World Junior Championships. Having lost to USA, Australia, Columbia
(surprise package of the tournament) and a very close game to Sweden, GB came
back from 4-0 down against Finland to trade to 13-10 down before scoring 5 in a
row and eventually winning 18-16. They had beaten Israel earlier in the week,
but they proved to be the whipping boys in the division losing every game they
played.

GB cannot make the semis, but if Columbia beat Finland in the morning as
expected when GB meet Canada, then that should set up a final 5/6 playoff game
for GB against the much improved Sweden. Sweden started the tournament badly
losing 14-12 to Columbia and looking rather poor until they beat GB, then ran
Australia very close. The winner of the match gets the pride of being the top
European team as the semis look like being USA Vs Columbia (score when they met
in the pool stage, 17-0) and Canada Vs Australia (score in pool stage was
17-13). Maybe it won’t be an all North American final if Australia can get in
on the show, but it does emphasise how far behind certain countries our
European juniors are.

PS Good luck to all the guys getting their A level results in the morning. It
will be interesting to see who gets their results text through and who plans to
wait until they return. So many off to different Universities this year, many
taking 3 years playing experience with them.
